Every see those Staples commercials where they use an “easy” button to solve tough problems? Upgrading to WordPress from Movable Type was a bit like that. Setup a database, edit a file, upload everything. Voila! WordPress was up-and-running. Then to migrate the existing content from MT. That took only a little more effort, requiring me to export everything from the old MT site, then run the import script for WP. I had to tweak some folder permissions, but with that hurdle cleared, everything went perfectly.
I still need to create a working .htaccess file to redirect any of the older format URLs, but it works as-is. I’ll update the style as time allows. It’s the substance that matters, right?

Funny story, actually. As I moved everything to the new server, I discovered problems with the actual MovableType executable code. I fussed around with the settings and did some searching on the problem. File permissions were ok, etc. but rather than executing the code when you submitted a comment tried to post a new entry, the browser simply displayed the Perl source code.
Since I had wanted to try WordPress, I thought I may as well give it a shot.
I spent less time installing and setting up WordPress, even with the import process included, than I spent trying to debug my MT problem.
So while it wasn’t exactly planned, it was opportune.

Good to hear about the easyness… I was surprised to not see any new entries on the RSS feed, so I checked the site manually… hmm. I had to get the new feed address saved — so now that’s done.

I’m considering switching over to WordPress from my existing handmade CMS. I’ve already got everything exported to the WP database (which I was actually quite proud of doing… it’s not as easy as exporting from one widely-used CMS to another), I’m just playing with it now. My question is this: is it possible to restrict people from commenting using my handle? Meaning, not to allow comments with a name of “Tigerblade” unless it’s me?
