This is a very interesting quote and I have had a few things happen this week either to me or my children that has brought reminders to us about a person in our lives.

It certainly is true that we did somehow focus on the wrongs rather than any rights.
It’s just human nature I suppose.

Hmmm… actually, I was looking at this quote very differently. For example, one of the very reasons Douglas MacArthur was remembered was BECAUSE he broke the rules. Rule-breaking was part of his greatness.

I think we can become slaves to convention and sometimes need to break out of our cell!

I see where you’re coming from.
And it’s great you can think like that.

My view was from myself and my children being victims so long from someone else ‘breaking the rules’ … unfortunately a person gets known for living a way without care for the consequences to others. To be known for that can’t be good.

Many rules protect, and to break them causes pain.

So in all, I guess depends on the rules, and the harm or benefit to others.

Interesting how experiences change your first understanding of a simple quote. Yours have blessedly been different.
    :)

That’s the beauty of a good quote. It makes you think, and it opens the door to interpretation and discussion.

“You are broken by the rules you remember.”

Nice twist on Doug’s quote, epiclectic! I actually ran across an interesting article on wired.com today about Apple, and how their CEO is well-known for breaking the rules: http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/magazine/16-04/bz_apple
